Shipping containers are almost completely airtight. This means that dangerous chemicals, such as phosphine, which are added when gassing against pests (fumigation), remain for a very long time. Chemicals in the goods can also be emitted from the goods during transport and reach high levels in the container air. Those who enter such containers risk acute poisoning. Work in unventilated containers may also increase the risk to develop cancer and other chronic health effects. It is difficult and expensive to measure which substances are present in the container, and at which concentrations. We have therefore developed methods to quickly pre-ventilate containers.
