Production of new green fuel can be situated in Örnsköldsvik

Liquid Wind from Gothenburg has started the project planning of a production facility for electromethanol in Örnsköldsvik. The total investment can be 1.5 billion SEK and the goal is to have a decision regarding the investment during 2022.

The production facitlity of the carbon neutral liquid electromethanol, or eMethanol, is to be situated on Övik Energi's premisses adjacent to Hörneborgsverket.

- To Liquid Wind, the collaboration with Övik Energi is very gratifying. We are in a very interesting development phase and the facility will probably be our first, full scale production facility, says Claes Fredriksson, CEO at Liquid Wind in a press release.

Liquid Wind will produce eMethanol, i.e. methanol which is based on electricity. Green hydrogen produced by wind power based electricity is combined with biogen carbon dioxide from Hörneborgsverket and the result is liquid methanol which can be used for e.g. fuel for ships.

At the moment, there are no ships being run on eMethanol but according to Liquid Wind, they are having discussions with leading shipping companies about using eMethanol as fuel for new ships.

To Övik Energi this gives them the opportunitity to be among the first in the world to use biogen carbon dioxide to produce electro fuel.

- We have to be a part of the development of new fuel to be able to reach a sustainable transport section, says Krisitina Säfsten, CEO at Övik Energi.

To build the facilitiy will take about two years which means that the production of eMethanol could begin 2024.
