The Construction Material Reuse Center Inaugurated – A Circular Future Takes Shape in Umeå

"The Construction Material Reuse Center demonstrates how we can combine innovation and sustainability in a tangible way. This is a unique collaboration between the municipality of Umeå and the construction industry," said Janet Ågren, Social Democrat and Second Vice Chair of the Municipal Executive Board.

The inauguration on Friday, January 17, was a great success, with around 70 participants gathering for a preview of the facilities and to learn more about the visions behind the project. The event began with a welcome reception where guests enjoyed locally produced hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic sparkling beverages, served by students from the Culinary and Food Program at Maja Beskow School.

"The Construction Material Reuse Center is a vital piece of the puzzle for reducing waste and creating a circular economy. At the same time, the operation contributes to social sustainability," said Ola Lundberg, Unit Manager for the Testing Arena/Reuse Shop.

A Unique Collaboration
Following the welcome speeches, participants joined a guided tour of the center's various sections, showcasing everything from reused wooden beams to modern construction components. Guests also witnessed a symbolic plank-sawing demonstration by Janet Ågren from Umeå Municipality and Christoffer Jonsson from ABC Umeå, representing the creation of new opportunities from old resources.

"Our ambition is to make circular construction the standard and overcome the barriers that have held us back. Through partnerships like this, we show that sustainability is not only possible – it’s essential for the future," said Christoffer Jonsson, Chair of ABC Umeå.
