Wind Power is Growing - Largest in December

In December, wind power became Sweden's largest source of electricity for the first time, even surpassing hydropower. However, hydropower retains its position as the leading electricity producer on an annual basis, according to Svensk Vindenergi.

During the fourth quarter, wind power generated 14.1 TWh of electricity, while nuclear power produced 12.4 TWh. The largest source was hydropower, with 16.2 TWh, according to Svensk Vindenergi, whose statistics are based on data from Svenska Kraftnät.

In December, wind power was the largest source of electricity, even surpassing hydropower.

"It is high time we get used to wind power being the largest source of electricity, especially during winter. Wind power delivers best when electricity is needed the most – 60 percent of wind power's annual production occurs during the cold half of the year," says Anton Johansson, market analyst at Svensk Vindenergi, in a statement.

Over the entire year, nuclear power remains larger than wind power. As usual, hydropower is by far the largest producer of electricity in Sweden.
