The Waste2Plastic project at Umeå University has been awarded 15 million SEK by the Swedish Energy Agency and its industrial partners to produce biodegradable plastic (PHA) using microalgae. These algae are cultivated in wastewater in Umeå, converting carbon dioxide from flue gases into biomass.

Skellefteå Kraft and SkyNRG have entered into a partnership to produce sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) in Skelleftehamn. The project, called SkyKraft, plans to use biogenic carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen to produce 100,000 tons of eSAF per year, equivalent to the fuel needed for 60,000 people to fly around the world.
New data indicates that Sweden generated a staggering 164 million tons of waste in 2022, marking an increase from the previous assessment in 2020. The majority of this waste, 86 percent, was mineral waste. Excluding mineral waste, 22.6 million tons of waste were produced, primarily from the construction industry and households.
Soilfood, a Nordic circular economy company, studies the utilisation of fibrous side streams from Metsä Board's mills and has identified a new use as raw material in animal bedding. Increasing the added value of secondary products made from side streams is a circular economy where raw materials are kept in use as long as possible.
Three and a half years ago, Johanna Vesterberg founded the furniture design company Normada in Luleå. With a solid background in textiles, carpentry, and furniture design, she had a clear vision: to change the way we view furniture by focusing on sustainability and circular solutions.
